The methods annex of the ” Evaluating the impact of nature-based solutions. A handbook for practitioners. March 2021″ has served as a reference for the establishment of indicators and measurement as well as calculation methodologies. This document is generic for many types of nature-based solutions. Therefore, an intensive work has been done to adapt it to green roofs and facades.
The handbook “Evaluating the impact of nature-based solutions. A handbook for practitioners. March 2021” has been used as a reference for defining the key aspects and indicators that will be included in the future Monitoring and Evaluation Plan for the operation and impact of green roofs and facades in the city of Barcelona.
The VP-BCN project has considered some of the winning green roofs and facades from the second green roof competition promoted by the Barcelona City Council through the Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape and Quality of Life (IMPUQV).

The Plan Natura Barcelona 2030 has recently been defined. The general objectives of the Plan Natura are as follows 1) To increase the city’s green infrastructure to maximize its services, especially those adapting to climate change, and improve the access to all citizens to urban nature. 2) To deploy and consolidate the ecological management and naturalization in managing the nature, at the service of citizen’s health and the conservation of biodiversity on Earth. 3) To support and promote biodiversity, protecting species, and improving habitats and their connectivity. 4) To increase knowledge, enjoyment and care of urban nature, and facilitate and promote the involvement of citizens in its conservation and improvement. The VP-BCN project is aligned and contributes to the achievement of these objectives.
The VP-BCN project has as its main reference the Green and Biodiversity Plan (2012-2020). This Plan envisions the city of Barcelona in the year 2050 as a city where nature and cities interact and are enhanced through the connectivity of the green, according to a model in which the green is not an ornamental complement but a true ecological infrastructure. This model is developed based on two key concepts, connectivity and re-naturalization, and is specified in two fundamental instruments, urban green corridors and spaces of opportunity. Thus, in a dense and compact city like Barcelona, exhausted the strategy of landscaping the existing voids and recovering pre-existing gardens, the new forms of urban green, close and productive, such as roofs, roofs, walls and partitions, and balconies, they have been consolidated as elements of proximity that allow nature to be introduced in all the cracks that the urban fabric allows.
